Getafe CF have reached an agreement with Dani Carvajal, who is tied to the club until 30 June 2027. The club announced it on Tuesday morning on its website and social media, with a presentation video built around the phrase "he's coming at five".

The 34-year-old right-back, born in Leganés, had been without a club since his contract with Real Madrid expired last June. As a free agent, Getafe were able to register him outside the transfer window.

In its statement, the club recalls that Carvajal has won 51 caps for Spain and has collected 29 trophies with Real Madrid's first team and the national side, including six European Cups and Euro 2024. Getafe highlight that the player will bring "experience and leadership" to the squad and welcome him "to this new chapter".

The deal has not been straightforward. Last week president Ángel Torres announced that the player had passed his medical, only to declare the move dead the following day. The obstacle was LaLiga's financial control, which limits how much each club can spend on its squad. Torres unblocked it with a personal guarantee and, once LaLiga had given its approval, all that remained was the player's decision, and he has finally said yes.

Carvajal came through Real Madrid's academy, gained experience at Bayer Leverkusen in the 2012-13 season and then spent thirteen seasons in the Real Madrid first team. His aim was to keep competing at the highest level without leaving Madrid, and Getafe allow him to do both.

The defender could begin training with his new team-mates as early as Tuesday. On Thursday the team face their next European fixture, away to Universitatea Craiova in Romania in the Conference League.
