Williams put the visitors ahead in the 27th minute and extended the lead in the 51st with his second goal of the afternoon, settling the result early (0-2).

The match took an unexpected turn: Yeray was sent off for a straight red in the 58th minute and Paredes, booked in the 72nd, picked up a second yellow in the 79th, leaving Athletic with nine men for the final half hour. Despite the numerical advantage, Getafe failed to pull a goal back: Greenwood missed a penalty in the 88th.

Bordalás brought on Angileri, Aleñá, Latasa and Jeremy Jorge — making his La Liga debut — for Diego Rico, Ilaix Moriba, Maksimović and Mata, who came off in the 74th, 59th, 89th and 89th minutes respectively.
