The match was played on a sad day, with the country in mourning after the Urda (Toledo) rail crash. Before kick-off, a heartfelt minute's silence was observed in memory of the victims.

The Andalusian side started without fear and gave an early warning in their first attack, with a shot from the edge of the box that Letáček, starting in goal for Getafe, turned behind for a corner. Shortly afterwards, Pepe Tejero curled a wide free kick, conceded by Sazonov, who was booked for the foul, straight into the top corner to make it 1-0 ten minutes in.

Getafe tried to respond, but Lebrijana struck again from another set piece: Yuyo Romero glanced home a wide free kick, taking advantage of a poor claim by Letáček, and the scoreboard read 2-0 before the half-hour mark.

José Bordalás's side had more of the ball but struggled to create danger against opponents who looked comfortable. The reaction came late in the first half. A weak punched clearance from the home goalkeeper, Antonio Lebrón, left the ball loose on the edge of the area, and Abdel Abqar struck it first time to make it 2-1.

In stoppage time, a move by Ibu Danfakha in the box left the ball loose, and Borja Mayoral bundled it into the net for the 2-2 that stood at the break.

Bordalás made a triple change at half-time: Orel Mangala, Valou and Drammeh came on for Sazonov, Davinchi and Risco, the first two of whom had been booked. Lebrijana later lost Pepe Tejero, scorer of the opening goal, who had to go off injured.

Just after the hour, Mangala received the ball outside the area and fired a right-footed shot past Lebrón to make it 2-3, the first time in the match that Getafe had been in front.

With the lead in hand, Getafe tried to kill the game off through possession, but almost paid for it in the final action: Mati found himself one-on-one with Letáček in the box, and the Getafe goalkeeper saved his effort to avoid extra time. Getafe thus open their Copa del Rey campaign with a win and progress in the competition, on a night when the memory of the victims will endure, above any result.
