José Bordalás's Getafe opened the 2024-25 season on Thursday 15 August at San Mamés, against an Athletic Club side led by Ernesto Valverde. Both teams arrived at matchday one without a single point on the board.

Athletic went ahead in the 27th minute through Sancet, making it 1-0 and forcing Getafe to come from behind on their opening day.

The equaliser came in the 64th minute courtesy of Uche, who levelled the score. The goal carried extra weight: it was the Nigerian forward's first in La Liga, in the same match that also marked his competition debut in a Getafe shirt.

Uche, who had already been booked before half-time (45th minute), ended up the man of the match with the equaliser. Álex Sola and Peter also made their debuts for the club in the starting eleven, while fellow debutant Carles Pérez was substituted at half-time. For Athletic, Nico Williams came off the bench in the second half, and Gorosabel, Prados, Unai Gómez and Ander Herrera were all shown yellow cards.

Referee Muñiz Ruiz took charge of a match that, according to the club's records, also marked Getafe's 200th drawn game in La Liga history. The point left Bordalás's side on 1 point and in 11th place after matchday one.
