Christantus Uche has undergone successful surgery in Lyon on the serious knee injury he sustained on 6 August in the friendly against AS Monaco. Getafe CF confirmed as much on Wednesday, stating that the operation "went normally and as planned".

The procedure was carried out under the supervision of Dr Christofer Oyola, head of Getafe's medical department, and Álvaro García Zudaire, the club's head of physiotherapy.

From Wednesday onwards, the player begins his rehabilitation programme alongside the club's medical staff. Getafe said it would make available to him "all the resources needed for a positive recovery", although it has not set out a specific timescale for his return to action.

The injury occurred in Getafe's final pre-season outing. Uche had to be stretchered off against the Monegasque side following a challenge from Mawissa, and two days later the club confirmed in a statement that he had sustained a serious injury to his right knee and would miss the entire season.

The Nigerian had returned to Getafe this summer after his spell at Crystal Palace and was one of the players José Bordalás was counting on for the new campaign. His absence leaves the manager without a footballer earmarked for a significant role in the squad throughout the season.

Getafe closed its statement by sending its support to the player: "The club wishes to send all our encouragement and support to Christantus during this process, in the hope that his progress goes as well as possible, as the entire Getafe family wants."
