Bordalás brought Dani Carvajal and Enes Ünal into a line-up of David Soria, Carvajal, Boselli, Djené, Mojica, Mangala, Gudelj, Andrés García, Satriano, Mario Martín and Ünal. Borja Mayoral missed out on the squad with a gastrointestinal virus.
Villarreal took control of the ball from the start but came up against an organised Getafe side who gave little space away. In the 26th minute, Mojica denied Buchanan a close-range finish. Getafe only ventured into the opposition box through the occasional run from Andrés García down the right. Shortly before half-time, David Soria kept the score level with a fine save from Mouriño's backheel.
After the break, Bordalás sent on Ramón Terrats for Mario Martín and Getafe enjoyed a little more of the ball for a few minutes. Villarreal soon regained the initiative: Soria stuck out a foot to stop Pape Gueye in a one-on-one, and Djené threw himself at the feet of Tani Oluwaseyi as he was about to shoot.
The game was decided in the closing stages. Nicolas Pépé, who had just come on, crossed from the right to the far post and Buchanan struck a volley for 1-0. Getafe had to push up in search of an equaliser without troubling their hosts, and in stoppage time Ayoze Pérez played Carlos Romero through on Soria for the final 2-0.
Referee Carlos Muñiz Muñoz booked Mario Martín and Gudelj for Getafe, and Comesaña and Renato Veiga for Villarreal. The match included a tribute to Jesús de Miguel, the former CD Tenerife player who died recently.
After the game, Carvajal pointed to the team's problem on the road: "Without scoring away from home it's hard to pick up points." He added: "We have to wise up away from the Coliseum."
