Getafe got the job done on Matchday 38 of LaLiga EA Sports and return to Europe after six seasons. Jose Bordalas's side, who were looking towards relegation back in January, completed a remarkable climb up the table to finish seventh with 51 points.
Osasuna, meanwhile, arrived at the Coliseum with the calculator in hand. Four consecutive defeats had sent them tumbling to the brink of relegation. Alessandro Lisci set up with a back three and opted for caution, but the plan unravelled in the second half.
The match began with Osasuna on top. Torro had a clear header and Raul Garcia found himself one-on-one with David Soria, but both efforts were straight at the goalkeeper. Getafe, hampered by the absences of Djene and Satriano, barely threatened in the first half. Only a Milla free-kick and a left-footed strike from Zaid Romero on the stroke of half-time served as warnings from the Azulones.
After the restart, Getafe stepped forward. In the 59th minute, Luis Milla picked up a loose ball outside the area and struck it. The shot took a deflection off Catena, wrong-footed Herrera and found the net. It was the 1-0 that was worth a European place.
Osasuna tried to respond in the closing stages, but their efforts failed to find the target. Salvation came from Montilivi, where Girona drew 1-1 with Elche, a result that kept the Navarrese side in the top flight. Valencia, who were leading against Barcelona, put pressure on Getafe for seventh place, but the scoreline at the Coliseum did not change.
With this victory, Getafe seal their return to Europe after six years. It will be the fourth continental campaign in their history, following three consecutive Europa League appearances between 2019 and 2021. Osasuna, meanwhile, complete an agonising survival and will remain in LaLiga for another season.
