The match began with Atlético striking early. Five minutes in, a shot from Rodrigo Mendoza came back off the post and Ademola Lookman, alert to the rebound, bundled the ball into the net. The opener did not unsettle Getafe, who looked to sit close to their own box and pick their moments on the counter.

Lookman doubled the lead in the 35th minute, finishing off a cross from the right by Carlos Martín. The reply from the blues arrived before the break, however. Álvaro Gutiérrez, an academy player of just 17, rattled the crossbar, Oblak produced a fine save from Joselu, and Gutiérrez himself pounced on the rebound to make it 2-1 in the 41st minute.

Getafe had gone toe to toe. Bordalás's side, who had trained that very morning at their Campoamor training camp in Alicante, held their shape with a starting eleven in which Moha and Davinchi stood out at the back, and Mady in midfield. The youth of the academy was virtue and risk in equal measure.

At half-time, Simeone changed all eleven Atlético players. Bordalás also made his moves, bringing on Yassin, Ibra, Ian Olivera, Montes and Ibu over the course of the second half. The third goal came in the 55th minute: a vertical pass from José María Giménez released Arnau Ortiz, who rounded David Soria and finished at his leisure.

The game then entered a lower-intensity phase, with the heat bearing down on Majadahonda. Mady went off injured in the 80th minute and Riquelme also ended up on the turf with a knock. In the 90th, Obed Vargas won and converted a penalty for the final 4-1.

Despite the result, the balance leaves positive feelings for a Getafe side under construction, still building pre-season minutes around a core of academy players set to be part of the immediate future. The next test will be on 1 August against Manchester United.
